A new tax on gambling winnings has come into force in Ghana. Since August 15, the African state is levying a tax of 10% on all gross winnings from sports betting, gambling and lotteries.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has previously advised that this tax will be automatically withheld at the time of payment of all wagers, gambling and lottery winnings. No tax will be withheld if the payout amount is equal to or less than the amount delivered,
Gambling operators are required to provide details of the amount wagered, winnings and tax withheld on payouts.
As noted, the new tax initiative has faced criticism from the younger generation. Its representatives argue that gambling winnings often serve as alternative sources of income for vulnerable segments of the population.
